AIA News5/14/2004Press ReleaseContact:Mary Mauerman (360) 943-6012 “Architects Endorse Sue Lani Madsen for State Representative”
(Spokane, WA) — The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Washington Council today announced its endorsement of Sue Lani Madsen, AIA, (R-Edwall) for state representative in the 7th legislative district, position 2. She is running to replace Representative Cathy McMorris (R-Kettle Falls) who is running for the US House of Representatives in Washington’s 5th Congressional District.
The AIA WA Council endorsed Madsen during a ceremony at the offices of the AIA Spokane chapter. Madsen is the only architect running for the Washington Legislature in 2004. AIA Spokane President Chuck Horgan, AIA, noted the importance of having a professional elected to the legislature, “We need legislators who are focused on solving Washington’s problems and getting our economy back on track. As an architect, Madsen is trained to listen carefully, identify a problem, and create a solution that everyone involved can support. The legislature needs consensus builders who can work cooperatively to pass important legislation.” “Sue Lani Madsen has the professional experience and business background needed to be effective in Olympia,” continued Horgan. Madsen has been an active member of the AIA Washington Council, serving as the President of the local chapter and as an officer on the state Board of Directors. During her service in on the Council Board, she was very active in legislative policy and advocacy efforts in Olympia. In addition to her architectural practice, Madsen helps to run the family homestead near Edwall, Washington. During her 25 years in the 7th District, she has developed strong roots in the community and has been active in many community support activities. The AIA Washington Council is Council is a professional society comprised of registered architects in the State of Washington. The mission of AIA Washington Council, incorporated in 1960, is to represent the common interests of all of Washington’s architects, to further public awareness of architects, and to represent the interests of the profession before state government. I am happy and honored to serve as chapter president for a second time. The last time I served in this capacity, I was also in the process of planning the 1999 Northwest and Pacific Regional Conference. I'm afraid some of the Presidential duties suffered at that time due to being overwhelmed by that task. Hopefully this time around I will be able to focus on governance and leadership without the additional distraction. Please let me know how I am doing. If you have suggestions, criticisms, or ideas, please get in touch with me. Attached is a calendar of activities for the year. It contains the dates of all the general membership meetings and board meetings for the year. We will strive to stick to these dates but there may times when we will need to revise a date or two. Board meetings are normally accomplished over the telephone, with the Tri-Cities members gathering at Dillman-Luvaas and the Yakima members at the Wardell's office. You are all invited to attend board meetings if you are interested or have an issue you would like to bring in front of the Board. The calendar also has the dates of AIA Washington Council Board meetings and other special events at the National and Regional level. You are represented at Washington Council by your's truly and Gary Watkins. Also, our very own Lois Wardell is on Washington Council's Executive Board as President-Elect. If you have an issue that you would like to see Washington Council tackle, any one of three of will be happy to take it up at the State level. Also, any member of AIA is welcome at the Washington Council board meetings as an observer. Only the designated representatives from each chapter can vote but all are welcome. In addition to the regularly schedule meetings, we are planning some additional activities and events that we hope will be interesting to all of you. As we will soon be designing our projects under the IBC, we are planning o provide some training in use of the IBC. I know there have been many training opportunities in Seattle, Spokane, Levenworth, etc. We hope it would be beneficial to our members to provide some quality training withing reasonable driving distance and at a reasonable cost. This year marks the 40th anniversary of our Chapter. We plan to mark this event with a gala celebration in September. We plan to invite the retired members of our chapter that we do not get to see very often. This is an event that needs someone to take the reins and do some party planning. Jim Dillman has volunteered to be a co-chairman but he doesn't have the time to do it all by himself. If anyone would like to work with Jim in planning this event , please let me know. Speaking of Jim Dillman, he has been working getting us involved in a project commemorating the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark's exploration of the west. The concept has been a design competition of something related to Sacajawea Park in Pasco. The exact project is unknown at this point but Jim hopes it will be pinned down shortly. The other exciting thing happening this year is we are nominating one of our members for fellowship for the first time in the history of our Chapter. Rod Knipper is going to submit an application to be inducted into the College of Fellows at the 2005 National Convention. This is historical event for us and hopefully the start of a new tradition. Our first general membership meeting is going to be February 25 at Snipes Mountain Brewing in Sunnyside. The topic will be "What's New in Lighting?" Presenting will be Boyd Bumpus from Blankenship and Associates in Spokane. Boyd and Blankenship Associates will host dinner up to $15.00/person including non-alcoholic beverage, tax and gratuity. Expect to get a meeting announcement about a week prior to the meeting. Hope to see you all there. By the time you receive this message, the 2004 legislative session will be about half over. This brings two issues to mind. First, AIA Washington Council is conducting the second annual Capitol Connections event in Olympia on February 19, 2004. This half-day event will begin with the presentation of the 2004 Civic Design Awards and then to be followed by two continuing education sessions with topics "Downtown Revival", "Marketing Your Firm", "Smart Sustainable Design" and "De-Mystifying Tort Reform". The continuing ed. sessions will be followed by an update on the legislative issues that are important to architects across the state. The day will end with the WCIC Legislative Reception. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your state legislators and lobby our issues in an informal setting. It's fun and informative. Give it a try. The second legislative session point is it reminds me that there is still time to make your 2003 APAC contribution. All contributions made through March, 2004 will be credited to the 2003 campaign. So far Central Washington member contributions total $215.00. Our goal is $600.00. Thank-you to all of you have contributed. If you have not contributed, please do so to help us meet our goal. That's it for now. Hope to all of soon in Olympia for Capitol Connections and in Sunnyside for our first meeting of the year.
