Grassroots
Leadership Conference, March 5–8 in Washington, D.C.

STATE OF THE INSTITUTE
At a Turning Point: Institute Looks to the Future
The AIA is at a point where anxious times are behind us and
the
leadership can look again to where the Institute should go
and how
it can get there, announced AIA Executive Vice President/CEO
Norman
L. Koonce, FAIA, during his State of the Institute address
March
7 at the 2003 AIA Grassroots Leadership and Legislative
Conference
in Washington, D.C.

Offers Emergency Funding for Historic Jewish Sites
Recipients include Prague Synagogue damaged
by recent floods
The World Monuments Fund, through its Jewish Heritage Grant
Program
and the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, announced $235,900 in
grants
to begin or sustain restorations of 13 historically
significant
synagogues in 11 countries that have deteriorated or fallen
into
ruin. For the first time, the groups awarded grants to
synagogues
in Russia, Georgia, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, and China,
expanding
the geographic scope of the program.

Wings of Asia Is for the Birds
Miami Metrozoo’s new aviary soon
to open
Seattle’s celebrated zoological designer, the Portico
Group,
with Miami-based Spillis Candela DMJM, Curtis Rogers Design
Studio,
and EAC Consulting, conducted monthly charrettes with their
Miami
Metrozoo clients and staffs to pull off an ornithological
mission
impossible: design and construction of the American Bankers
Family
Aviary in 22 months. The 55,000-square-foot structure, the
largest
open-air aviary for Asian birds in the Western hemisphere,
will
house 300 species of feathered friends and replace a
facility destroyed
by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Pentagon Chooses Memorial
Design
A design featuring 184 “light benches,” each
inscribed
with the name of a victim of the September 11 attack on the
Pentagon,
won the competition for a memorial marking the tragedy.
Terry Riley,
chief curator of design and architecture at the New York
Museum
of Modern Art and chair of the jury that chose the project,
announced
the winning design during a Pentagon press conference March
3.
