Public
Radio Program Defines the Shape of Texas
Elizabeth Chu Richter, AIA, has long harbored a desire to
share her love of architecture, elevate public awareness of
the
built environment, and raise the profession’s profile
across
her home state. Her resulting labor of love is The
Shape of Texas, a public radio program that offers travelers
and other listeners a personal guide to contemporary and
historical
architecture and places exemplifying the culture and
heritage of
the Lone Star State.
Keune Becomes Co-director of UIA Commission
Commission debates professional guidelines

the
Architectural Society of China. Keune replaces James A.
Scheeler,
FAIA, who served as a commission co-director in 1994, a
position
he founded and held until Keune’s appointment in
November
2002.
Congress
for the New Urbanism Announces 15 Charter Award Winners
The Congress for the New Urbanism, a San Francisco-based
nonprofit
organization advocating mixed-use neighborhoods with
pedestrian-friendly
buildings, selected 15 projects as exemplars of New
Urbanism. The
annual awards program recognizes excellence at all scales of
design,
each with a different approach to improving a city, town, or
region.
Winning projects range from a new block in Berlin to a
regional
plan for the San Francisco Bay area and a freeway demolition
in
Milwaukee.
Convention
Delegates Polled Via Electronic Voting
Architects share opinions on the AIA,
practice, and the profession
At the May 10 business meeting of the 135th AIA convention
in San
Diego, delegates voted unanimously to adopt a Bylaws
amendment that
permits electronic voting and eliminates use of standing
votes at
annual and special corporate meetings. Delegates later had
the opportunity
to test electronic polling keypads on a sample poll that
picked
up a number of the questions asked of AIA Grassroots
Leadership
Conference attendees earlier this year. View
a PowerPoint presentation (420 Kb) comparing the answers of
convention delegates and grassroots attendees, or
a PDF version (5 Mb) of the same data. (Left-click to launch
either file, right-click to download.)

Some Tips on How to Present Your Fee to
Clients
From Architect’s
Essentials of Winning Proposals
by Frank Stasiowski, FAIA
H.H. Richardson is said to have declared that the three most
important
rules of architecture are “Get the job. Get the next
job.
Then get the next job.” Frank Stasiowski, FAIA,
founder and
president of PSMJ Resources Inc., the Boston-based
management consulting
firm for architects, can help you do that with his
just-published
book, Architect’s Essentials of
Winning Proposals. The newest addition to John Wiley &
Sons’ “Architect’s Essentials”
series, Winning
Proposals offers many helpful checklists of tips such as
this one on “presenting your fee” to the client.

Interiors
Groups Collaborate on Sustainable Design Leadership Awards
Nominations due August 1
The AIA Interiors Committee, International Interior Design
Association,
and CoreNet Global are collaborating to support an
international
awards program that recognizes sustainable design leadership
for
the interior built environment. Two awards—one for a
design
professional or firm, the other for a business
organization—will
recognize “sustainable design leadership as
articulated by
advocacy, mentoring, and projects that reflect consistent
commitment
to the principles of sustainability in professional
practice.”
The Sustainable Design Leadership Award, underwritten by the
Tandus
Group, Dalton, Ga., will define design excellence in a new
and expanded
context, according to the group’s director of
architecture
and design marketing Ross Leonard. Nominations opened May 15
and
will close August 1. Self-nominations or nominations by
others are
welcome, and applications
are available at the Interiors Committee Web site. For more
information, contact: Program
Manager Martha Parker, 888-548-5800.
