California Commission Votes to Support Use of NFPA Codes
Despite overwhelming testimony from agencies and members of the construction industry in opposition to the move, the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC) voted 8-2 on July 29 to support the use of the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 5000 Building Code, NFPA 1 Fire Code, along with the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Official’s IAPMO Plumbing and Mechanical Code. The CBSC also voted to support the use of the International Residential Code, but without the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing divisions.

Andy Gallo, co-owner of Eastern Memorials, Falls Church, Va., etches the final touches onto the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, marking the exact spot where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech 40 years ago. The serene “memorial within a memorial” is a simple 10-inch-tall by 24-inch-wide inscription.

Enterprise Foundation Names Five Architectural Fellows
Recipients to work with nonprofits in low-income areas
Five designers will spend the next three years helping to revitalize low-income areas at locations throughout the country as recipients of the Frederick P. Rose Architectural Fellowship awards. The Enterprise Foundation, a national nonprofit housing and community development organization, awarded the fellowships. Each fellow will receive a $40,000 annual stipend plus benefits and will work directly with a nonprofit development organization in need of their services.

NCARB Names Recipients of 2003 President's Medals for Distinguished Service
National Council of Architectural Registration Boards President C. Robert Campbell, FAIA, awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service to five individuals associated with the council who have made significant contributions to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare through their service to NCARB and the practice of architecture. Campbell presented the medals to recipients at the close of the NCARB annual meeting and conference held in June in San Antonio.

The Octagon Regains a Box

Restored Ghent Treaty box
goes on display
The brass-studded box that transported the Treaty of Ghent, the document that formally ended the War of 1812, has been restored and returned to The Octagon in Washington, D.C. A public viewing of the Ghent Treaty Box and a lecture on the British burning of the capital will take place at The Octagon on August 24, the 189th anniversary of that conflagration. The treaty box, which had aged badly over the past two centuries, has not been on public display since its conservation and will only be on view at this event.

Historic Georgetown Rekindles an Old Flame
Nestled in the heart of Washington, D.C.’s historic Georgetown district, a 1930s-era incinerator building has been radically transformed into a mixed-use hotel, retail space, and multiplex theatre complex by architects Gary Edward Handel & Associates of New York City in partnership with Shalom Baranes & Associates of Washington, D.C. The building’s architectural focal point is restoration of the main structure, now the hotel’s lobby and meeting lounge, complete with a 130-foot-tall brick smokestack that serves as a reminder of Georgetown’s once-thriving waterfront industries. Developed by Millennium Partners of New York City and managed by Ritz-Carlton Hotels, this new multipurpose facility offers 52 deluxe rooms, 29 executive suites, 5 luxury suites, plus a limited collection of residential condominiums.

Associates’ Esprit Helps Them Take ARE
The ARE is so convenient to take that nobody’s taking it anymore. Or so it seems. To help turn the tide on this perceived phenomenon, the AIA Baltimore Associate members are trying a new twist on an old idea. They got together with architects and affiliated professionals to create Achieving Registration Together, a study course complete with field visits and a set schedule for taking, as a group, all nine ARE sections over the course of one year.

AIACC Ready to Spark Creative Ideas in Monterey
The AIA California Council (AIACC) is hosting its 16th Annual AIACC Monterey Design Conference September 12-14 at the breathtaking Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, Calif. Asilomar, which means “refuge by the sea” in Spanish, and its 13 historic houses are considered Julia Morgan’s masterwork. This year’s program features as keynote speaker the internationally acclaimed and honored Enrique Norten, Hon. FAIA, who founded TEN Arquitectos in Mexico City in 1985.

In Praise of the Classics: The AIA Twenty-five Year Award

The buildings chosen to receive the AIA Twenty-five Year Award—from the Salk Institute to the Gateway Arch and Rockefeller Center—distinguish themselves by their ability to stand to the test of time. They must have been completed 25 to 35 years ago and be projects in the U.S. or abroad designed by an architect licensed in the U.S. Any AIA member may nominate a candidate structure: read on for criteria and a list of the recipients from 1969-2003.
